accessing front cylinder

In order to be able to turn the crank shaft the central lid needs to be unsrewed. Rumours are this will never turn. In my case I needed a chisel to remove the piece. Now, I will have to order a new one for replacement :-(

The cover over the valves comes off easily. Same for the outer sparkplug. These are still the first sparks after almost 60 000 miles. The gap at the eletrodes is about 1.5 mm. Time to check the valve adjustment. This was never checked during operation. It is 0.2 and 0.1 at the inflow and 0.2 at the outflow.

This is also an oportunity to check the tensioner of the cam shaft chain. The blocking wedge extends 3 mm above the top (should be less than 6).

Africa Twin

I removed the second spark only after the valve cover came off because it is now easier to be accessed.

The crank shaft should be on the FT mark by now since we checked the valve adjustment. The cam shaft should have the top mark showing upright (to be seen between the chain wheel and the cam shaft bearing). The marks on the chain wheel are in line with the top edge of the cylinder head.

Even the chain has a color mark but I don't think it is important to have the chain in the same position.

Africa Twin

The position of the cam shaft chain before dismantling. The valves are already gone. 5 screws! This should better be done later after loosening the chain wheel, but I didn't know better. Note the position of sleeves when removing valves!

Africa Twin

Watch how to fix the tensioner by poking a 2mm nail through the little hole. Watch the position of the sleeve when taking off the cam shaft bearing.

Africa Twin

I found it not possible to get the chain off without removing the chain wheel. The two screws of the chain wheel were very tight. I will need new ones because the head got a little damage. The cam shaft is blocked with a screw driver to prevent it from turning

Africa Twin

Cam shaft is gone. The chain is secured from falling into the engine. Before opening the cylinder watch the small screw (Allen screw)

Africa Twin

The nuts on the cylinder bolts need a big wrench! And they will be replaced because of damage from the wrench.

Africa Twin

Valves from underneath look good.

Africa Twin

The same procedure for the aft cylinder. Measured valve play is 0.2 at outflow and 0.15 at inflow.
